Preface#
Recently, while using the desktop sound card microphone to monitor the sound, there has always been a static sound that occurs after a while. I have tried various methods such as increasing the buffer, CPU scheduling, and DPC latency, but none of them worked.
Suddenly, I had a thought and suspected that it might be an issue with my virtual patch cable tool. The tool I was using was ASIOLinkPro, which hasn't been updated for a long time and is no longer maintained. After some searching, I found that there is also Voicemeeter software that can achieve similar functionality. After tinkering with it for an afternoon, I indeed found that there was no sound issue anymore.
Considering my memory, I will record the configuration method.
Software Versions and Hardware Used#
Software#
DAW: Studio One 7.0.2.103351 Win x64
Tool: Voicemeeter Banana Version: 2.1.1.9
Hardware#
Sound Card: Focusrite solo3
Microphone: Audio-Technica AT 2035
Desktop Configuration#
CPU: Intel Core i9-13900K

Voicemeeter Configuration#
1. Disable Hardware Inputs and Outputs in Sound Settings#
Disable Voicemeeter In 1/2/3/4/5 during playback
Disable Voicemeeter Out A1/A2/A3/A4/A5 during recording
These are hardware-related and can be ignored directly. If they are not present after installation, just ignore them.
For the Banana version, you can also disable Voicemeeter VAIO3 Input / Voicemeeter Out B3, as these channels are only available in the Potato version.
2. Set Default Playback and Recording Devices#
Set Voicemeeter Input as the default output device
Set Voicemeeter AUX Input as the auxiliary output device (for sounds that need to be split)
Set Voicemeeter Out B1 as the default input device
3. Set Default Input and Output Format#
In Windows sound settings, set all default inputs and outputs to 2 channels, 24-bit, 48000 Hz.
If the configuration is lower, you can change it to 44100 Hz.
4. Set A1 Output Device to ASIO Focusrite USB ASIO#
5. Set Input Device #1#
Prefer WDM devices for better latency.
6. Set Channel Forwarding#
Configure according to the image below.
Enable forwarding for Stereo Input 1 to A1 for monitoring (the monitored sound is the microphone sound).
The Input in Virtual Inputs needs to be monitored through A1 to hear the main output sound; this sound will not be transmitted to others through the B1 microphone.
Enable forwarding for Aux B1, set the output device for background music and accompaniment that needs to be split to Aux Input, and forward it to the B1 microphone through this tool, ultimately passing it to others.
Rack Connection Settings#
At this point, the configuration of VoiceMeeter is temporarily complete. Let's continue configuring Studio One.
Studio One Configuration#
1. Input and Output Settings#
Also, set the sample rate in the general settings of this window to match the previous settings (I set it to 48 kHz, 24 Bit).
2. Track Settings#
Add three audio tracks: one for the microphone, one for music/accompaniment, and one for other outputs.
After setting it up as shown below, the basic configuration is complete. You can add effects as needed.
Summary#
This setup allows the sound normally played by the computer (Input) not to be transmitted to the virtual microphone B1, thus not heard by others.
The sound that needs to be heard by others can be actively set to use the software's output device as Aux Input.
For a more advanced setup, you can add RVC real-time voice-changing effects by simply adding a track in Studio One, but this requires an additional virtual patch cable plugin, which can be addressed if needed.
